A downloadable game for Windows, Linux, and Android

Once upon a time ruthless pirates ruled the seven seas. But the time has changed. As the Admiral of Royal Navy it's your assignment to make the sea safe again. Battle, capture and tame piratesses to increase your rank in the ultimate pursue to track down and bring to justice notorious Sabre D'Orage.

This project is abandoned

This means it is "released" almost as-is, without proper art, tutorial, balancing, several game modes, game saving, etc. But on the bright side we have a lot of bugs.

Reason: it needs too much art, at least 300-400 hours of drawing. And as I'm a bad painter I'd rather focus on gameplay-oriented game with less demand for graphics quantity and quality, and therefore this project is unlikely to receive any further development... Unless someone with enough skill and dedication decides to contribute missing art, it's a free and open-source project after all ;)

About the game

Piratess in Distress is a "strip version" of Sea Battle (aka Battle Ship) game.

The goal of the game is to find enemy ships on a rectangular field by shooting at specific tile and destroy opponent's ships faster than the piratess destroys yours. Ships are linear, occupy one or more tiles on the map and cannot touch each other except by corners.

Each of opponent's ship is liked to one article of piratess' clothes. Destroying all large ships allows you to use rope to tie up the enemy to prevent her from attacking and escaping. If the battle is won with the opponent tied up, the piratess is captured.

You can "tame" the captured piratess in the Lower Deck. After tamed, the prisoner provides a persistent rank bonus that increases the size of your field, amount of your ships, number of props and allows you to win against stronger opponents.

Some opponents have quirks that alter their behavior making fighting them harder or easier.

As you progress through ranks and defeat bosses, you unlock stronger enemies and more props to counter their quirks.

Sad to see the project being canceled but eh, it happens. I just hope someone will pick this project and add more to it

The lack of colored and detailed art actually gives the game aesthetic, so the lack of too much art is a good, or atleast not a bad thing imo.

Thank you! :D Yeah, that was an experiment to have “paper” style with aim at testing how it would work for Lacerti Plague game (which is supposed to happen completely in character’s diary). Yet the fact that all the opponents look exactly the same (and none of them was supposed to look like that :D) and don’t change expressions/poses is just absolutely shameful… But alas…

I cant get past the first fight because if you destroy the big ship first then the smaller one the game doesnt count it as a win and you are just stuck there :( it doesnt do that with destroying the small ship first but I am guessing you need to tie them up and win to progress

(1 edit)

Yes, absolutely correct. You need to destroy the big ship. Then “find” the small one (on Lapine it’s not so important, but for stronger opponents this may become tricky), tie up the opponent and finish the small ship.

Ah glad I understand the game. Here is hoping that the bug isnt too hard to fix I would like to see more of the game.

Ughmm… this is intended behavior :) You need to win with the opponent tied up to capture her. Or maybe I didn’t understand you correctly?

Yes, there is a bug that sometimes after taming Lapine or some similar low-level opponent the game freezes. Unfortunately that one isn’t easy to fix, and would require reworking of the enemy generation system, nothing too huge, but will take some time which unfortunately isn’t available for this canceled project.

Ah that is a shame. Yea it is a consistent freeze no matter what I do. Maybe it is just windows only or my laptop specifically idk yet. I tried to get past it about 5 or 6 times and the freeze still happened (even when I tied her up)

Weird, let me check. I must admit I’ve tested it lately only on Android and Linux, now let me grab Windows build and check how it works.

Yes, I can reproduce the bug on Windows! Working on a fix.

the game doesnt count it as a win and you are just stuck there

Ah, reading again… I think I get it. Most likely the game just froze (this seems to happen from time to time on low-level opponents). Try just restarting it.

Yeah it has been very consistent... Tried it again another few times and found more things like the ships being unable to be placed which crashes the game and also revealing the last ship when they hit a bomb which causes the game to freak out a bit lol. No matter what I do though it keeps freezing :(

Yes, sorry about that. I’m working on a fix right now (investigating how it can even happen…)

Huge THANK YOU for catching this bug! I’ve found the reason and fixed it!
